HERE & THERE - PART I

Happy 278th Birthday to President George Washington! (1732-1799) - but there are no official celebrations today. The official Presidents' Day was moved to the 3rd Monday of February, this year on February 15th, several years ago, when it was combined with the birthday commemoration of Abe Lincoln (actually on February 12th)

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT THE MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA: I waited until all the tickets were sold (since I didn't clear this with anyone and in the past have been accused of exploiting the memory of someone), but at the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA on Tuesday, the 2nd of March, I plan to dedicate the evening to the memory of the late Earl Wentz and his personal project, the Great American Composer series, http://www.americomps.com/ , which he produced starting in 2000, mostly at DON'T TELL MAMA in NYC. Not only did Earl use these events to bring to our attention some great songwriters/composers, but by creating original, multi-performer revues each time, he exposed us to hundreds of great vocalists. Earl attended many of our CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE events over the years, and was a GOLD member as well.

I guess it is finally official. Harold Sanditen wrote from London that he is reprising his show "Love Exposed" for MARCH IS CABARET MONTH at PIZZA ON THE PARK (11 Knightsbridge, Hyde Park Corner, London - 020-7235-5273 - http://www.pizzaonthepark.co.uk/ ) on Monday, March 15th at 8:30 pm. But he also writes that PIZZA ON THE PARK is closing permanently in June. The site is being redeveloped as a hotel, meaning that London is losing its last only REAL cabaret space. Now we've written of the club's imminent demise for several years, so I guess it truly won't be over until that legendary "fat lady sings."

More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - including any last minute news items that come in just before we "go to press" and more comments and commentary on the art and artists of cabaret. And even more news can be found on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/

NYC: RAVEN O SPENDS ONE NIGHT WITH YOU

Raven O will performs his one-man show, One Night With You - an autobiographical look at his life in story and song - at THE BLEEKER STREET THEATER (45 Bleecker Street, NYC - TKTS: http://www.telecharge.com/ ) on Tuesdays, February 23rd & March 2nd at 8:00 pm. Known worldwide for his starring role in Cirque Du Soleil's Zumanity, Raven O is a master at captivating audiences. On stage, he is the son of the devil one minute, a soul wrenching swan singer the next. His performances are fearless, provocative and often times off-the-wall. Already at the age of 7, Raven O knew his hometown of Oahu, Hawaii was too small for him. He had his sights on the Big Apple. At 18, he entered and won a dance contest with a first place prize being a roundtrip ticket to New York City. He later learned the organizers did not have enough money to cover a return trip. They offered Raven O a one-way ticket and he took it - never looking back. He soon became a fixture in the East Village club world. He sung in dark, seedy underground cabarets and burlesque theatre houses. His notoriety grew when he began touring with Sylvain Sylvain of The New York Dolls. Cirque Du Soleil was a major turning point for the performer. After being recommended by his best friend Joey Arias, the troupe invited Raven O to host their Zumanity show in Las Vegas. In 2007, after three long years in Las Vegas, Raven O returned to his love - New York City - to host Andre Balaz's 50th birthday party. Simon Hammerstein, grandson of Oscar Hammerstein, happened to be in the audience and after the show, he invited Raven O to mc his downtown theatre, The Box. Raven O is currently preparing to release his first musical cd this summer. He will preview the album this spring with a special pre-release of "Heaven", a cover of the classic Psychedelic Furs song. Tickets are $21.50 - group rates available.

Jay Michael Reeds takes a musical journey of country rock favorites in his one-man show Road Trip, which returns to DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/ ) on Friday, February 26th at 9:15 pm. Road Trip features fourteen tunes, sung by J. Michael in his own original style. The songs range from Johnny Cash's "I've Been Everywhere" to Joni Mitchell's "Herjira" to Burt Bacharach's "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" to Eddie Rabbit's "I Love a Rainy Night." J is accompanied by Wells Hanley on piano, Matt Kane on drums, Tony Romano on guitar and Ritt Henn on bass. Reeds is a native New Yorker and a singer/performer with a close affinity for jazz, and an uncanny ability to use his voice to reinterpret songs from other genres and make them his own: nuanced and refreshing. Growing up, J. Michael always had a passion for music, having started taking singing lessons at a very young age, though he primarily dabbled in theatre music. He began pursuing jazz after attending a Trudi Mann open mic, and his pursuit turned a corner when he began to collaborate with pianist Wells Hanley. He has released one full-length album, "8th & Mona Lisa" and is set to re-release his sophomore album, UNDER AN URBAN MOON, a collection of jazz standards as well as jazzy re-interpretations of classic folk-rock songs in late March 2010. Vocalist Mike Schuil brings his show "Toes In The Sand" to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/ ) on Saturday, February 27th at 10:00 pm and Friday, March 19th at 7:00 pm. The show marks Mike Schuil's return to New York cabaret for the first time since his well-received debut, "Songs From Across The River - Springsteen & Sinatra." This time he ventures a bit further afield from his native New Jersey for a mostly Brazilian evening of songs both lighthearted and dramatic. It's a warm, tropical breeze on a cold winter's night. Working with a trio of accomplished musicians (Wells Hanley on piano, Peter Brendler on bass, and Jeff Davis on drums) and teaming once again with director Gerry Geddes, Mike takes a big step forward as a cabaret performer. The show features songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Stephen Bishop, Richard Rodney Bennett and others. Of course, not wanting to journey too far away from his roots, there will be a few Sinatra moments, and even a bit of Bruce. His smooth vocals combined with the simmering sounds of his trio promise that "Toes In The Sand" should be a delightful trip south of the border. There is a $15 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

Born in Brazil and raised in San Francisco, Zane attended San Francisco State University's Voice Performance program. A popular Bay Area vocalist, she performed at such lauded nightspots as Fanny's, The Plush Room, and Trinity Place. Relocating to New York in the early 90's, Zane studied with the legendary singer Jackie Paris and others, while also appearing at Eighty Eights, Danny's Skylight Room, CBGB's and The Bitter End.
