CABARET HOTLINE RELOCATES THIS WEEKEND!
Well, my bags are packed and we're moving on to a new apartment/office for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The truck has been ordered for Saturday, the 23rd to transport all from Astoria in Queens to Elmhurst, Queens. Actually, the "brains" of my office, my desktop MAC computer, is already at the new apartment - I am writing and sending this issue off to you all using my baby iBook computer, while the G3 awaits me, getting a few days rest before we reconnect at the new space.

The new DSL line may take a few days extra to install, but the fellow who already lives at the apartment I will share has a DSL line with a wireless router, and since my iBook is equipped for wireless connection, Mondays issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE should be sent out pretty much on schedule. In fact, the G3 may be getting some extra rest for several days while the new phone/DSL line gets installed and tested.

Please note that the mailing address of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will not change - it will remain 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036 - this is a MAILBOXES, ETC. store where I have received my mail for many years (ever since my mail began disappearing at my former mid-town address).

SAD NEWS - RICHARD KENNEDY
As many of you may have already heard, MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs - http://www.macnyc.com/ ) Board of Directors member Richard Kennedy passed away suddenly over the weekend. Mr. Kennedy was also on the staff of the NYC PBS TV Channel Thirteen/WNET and an integral part of their pledge productions for many years. His work around performance programming was legendary, including the creation of CABARET THIRTEEN, which was his personal labor of love. Mr. Kennedy's family have not yet finalized plans, but will organize a memorial service at St. Bartholomew's Church in Manhattan towards the end of April. Here is the notice that ran in the NY TIMES a few days ago:

"In memoriam: Richard T. P. Kennedy - The staff and volunteers of Thirteen/WNET New York mourns the loss and celebrates the life of our beloved friend and colleague Richard T. P. Kennedy, a well-respected producer with Thirteen's on-air production department. His devotion to excellence and commitment to the performing arts was an inspiration to us all, especially in his creation of Cabaret Thirteen. Our heartfelt condolences are with his family and friends, and we join them in remembering a truly unique man whose passion for show business and our City was legendary. As he himself would have said, 'Shine on, star.'"

NEW REVIEWS/OVERVIEWS ADDED TO THE WEBSITE

SIGHTINGS
Spotted at BUY BUY BABY (270 Seventh Avenue, NYC - 917-344-1555 - http://www.buybuybaby.com/), a store for families with new babies, Carolyn Montgomery leading expectant mothers and cabaret vocalists Julie Reyburn and Heather Gilchriest through the store, passing along advice on all the things they should and should not buy. Both moms-to-be are expecting girls, both in June. My informant reported that both gals looked adorable.

I HOPE TO SEE ALL NYC CABARET FANS THIS MONDAY NIGHT AT SYMPHONY SPACE
MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs - http://www.macnyc.com/ ) will be holding its 2005 MAC Awards show - Monday, April 25th. This is THE year, THE time and THE place for all NYC area performers and friends of cabaret to show their stuff by purchasing a ticket and attending the show. Come and celebrate the NEW MAC. No longer calling itself a "trade organization" to promote cabaret venues, MAC has been changing to an organization to promote the art of cabaret and promote the efforts of performers and clubs alike. MAC always puts on a darned good awards show and all NYC area performers and cabaret fans who love cabaret and want to see it continue to grow and flourish should be attending this year, showing their support.

Attending this year's show at THE PETER NORTON SYMPHONY SPACE (Broadway at 95th Street - 212-864-1414) will not be easy for me this year, since it is the Monday after I move to my new apartment. But I will be there, crutches and all, to show my support for cabaret, for cabaret performers, and for the volunteers who serve on the MAC Board. I hope to see ALL NYC area performers there as well.

The official MAC after-show party will be held at AIX (2398 Broadway (at 88th Street, NYC - 212-874-7400). Tickets are $45 and best bet is to phone MAC at 212-465-2662 to reserve your tickets, since space is very limited.

DON'T GET AROUND AS MUCH AS BEFORE BUT ....
The process of moving to a new apartment, coupled with recovering from a very serious knee injury and the necessary surgery and recovery has forced me to cut back considerably on my cabaret attendance. Plus, getting around with the leg brace and crutches is tedious and very tiring (I have come to hate stairways!). But I saw a few shows in the past few days that made it all worthwhile.

On Monday, April 18th I fulfilled a promise made to a NYC newcomer a few weeks back. His name is David Austin, he hails from Seattle, and he is a singer/songwriter making his mark in the big apple. He was presenting a cabaret show featuring his songs at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/ ), and this show was the last of the series - I simply could not make it to the previous performances. I hear the show is coming back in May, and I strongly urge you to catch it. Mr. Austin has a refreshing approach to what he writes about in his lyrics, generous on the humor, and very touching at the same time. If you enjoy the marvelous creations of Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich, I think you will enjoy Mr. Austin's creations as well. The show is called "Waiting for the 5, 6, 7, 8" and is directed by Scot Charles Anderson with Steve Sweeting at the piano. In the cast, in addition to David Austin, are Michael Mendiola and Anna Lauris. Watch the ENCORE schedule for the May dates.

Feeling so great, and still full of vim and vigor, I decided to head over to DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/ ) to catch another newcomer, Matt Sigl, with his debut show "Unstuck In Time." And what a catch it was! Mr. Sigl's show was so entertaining, so filled with cleverness and wit, I am already anticipating seeing it a second time. His claim is that, while he is just in his twenties, he is stuck in a time warp - compelled to sing the songs of Noel Coward, Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer and others of a bygone era. And sing them he does, with gusto and panache. For a few seconds I could see a young Steve Ross at the microphone - Mr. Sigl looks as good in a tuxedo as the famed Mr. Ross, and could easily pass as a clone of the master. Such fun - with a lot of observations and asides that kept the audience bubbling with laughter. This was the opening night of his NYC cabaret debut, so you have some more dates to see what I'm talking about: Sunday, April 24th at 8:00 pm and Mondays, May 9th & 16th at 9:30 pm.

Then last night I had to pick up my mail and decided to drop in at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/ ) at catch Teri Lynn Paul's show at 7:00 pm, featuring Bobby Peaco at the piano. Note to Ms. Paul: I have been to your every show since I first saw you perform at EIGHT EIGHTS and THE TRIAD (not called the TRIAD back then) way back before there was a CABARET HOTLINE! This show can be counted among the finest you have done! Teri is recording this show for an upcoming CD and it will only be presented 2 more times - on Monday and Wednesday, April 25th & 27th at 7:00 pm. Please make every attempt to see this one - and after the show beg her to extend the show so that I can go back and see it again.

My next trip to town will probably be on Friday, the 22nd at 7:00 pm, my last chance to catch another NYC cabaret debut, again at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/ ). The performer is Kevin Reed, and I've heard him sing in the ENCORE piano bar several times, and cannot wait to see his full show. I hear that this show is nearly completely sold out.

ON WITH THE NEWS
I have a lot of cabaret news for you. I promise you will read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else!

SPECIAL LATE BREAKING NEWS
Here are a few items so new and fresh, I have hardly had time to proofread them!
"LISTEN TO MY HEART - THE SONGS OF DAVID FRIEDMAN" IN LONDON IN MAY
Wild Oats Productions presents the UK Premiere of "Listen to My Heart - The Songs of David Friedman" for 8 performances only, Wednesdays through Saturdays, May 4th through 7th & May 11th through 14th at 8:00 pm at THE BROCKLEY JACK THEATRE (410 Brockley Road, Brockley, London - 020 8291 6354 - http://www.brockleyjack.co.uk/ ). Journeying deep inside one's heart can be exhilarating, life altering, even painful, but invariably it's worth the trip. Emotions may be unique to every one of us, but collectively, more than anything on this earth, they remind us we're alive. No one captures this aspect of the human spirit more brilliantly than David Friedman. And he does it with songs. Now we have the chance to experience these feelings in David's captivating new musical revue, LISTEN TO MY HEART. Directed by Joseph C. Walsh, Musical Directed by Alexander Rudd and featuring Robert Archibald, Jo Brewin, Louisa Gummer, Nikola Monfort and Russell Whitehead. Call for information and ticket prices.

McDonnell (Urinetown 2000 NY Fringe Festival) with musical direction by Barbara Anselmi, Reddy or Not includes 70s pop chart hits like "I Am Woman," "You and Me Against the World," and "Ain't No Way to Treat a Lady." NEWS ABOUT THE CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE WEBSITE

CABARET HOTLINE SPRING BENEFIT UPDATE
This special on-line benefit is being held to cover the expenses coming up for me in the next few weeks. Medicare will not cover all the costs of my recent knee operation (there are deductibles, co-pays, non-covered procedures, travel expenses, etc., to worry about). Plus, with my roommate moving out unexpectedly on the 31st of March, I needed to pay "double rent" in April, and I had to find a new living space, which will mean moving expenses, advance rent & security deposit and other possible unexpected charges. In fact, I immediately am short the estimated $200 I will need on Saturday to pay for the move (it needs to be paid in cash).

This is an on-line benefit - you don't need to make a reservation for, you don't need to brave the elements, you don't need to hire a baby sitter and you don't need to pay a huge fee to park your car in order to attend. You don't need to pay a 2-drink minimum, and, best of all, folks anywhere in the world can take part. Just go to my website and click on the SPRING BENEFIT DRIVE link at the top of the right column. You can donate any amount - $10, $50, $100, whatever you can afford. I will be posting a running total of receipts and all donors will be listed (unless they decline) on a special 'ANGELS' page on the website. So far over $1,500 has been received towards our $2,500 estimated goal. I am counting on you to help us through this difficult and expensive period.

If you prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal, you can send a check made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, 676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.

2005-2006 MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS NOW BEING ACCEPTED
If you wish instead to pre-renew your membership for the 2005-2006 membership year (which starts on July 6, 2005) there is also a link on the BENEFIT / MEMBERSHIP DRIVE page to do just that. New 2005-2006 memberships will not start until May 5th. You financial support will be most appreciated. Please keep in mind that, except for a monthly social security check, my only income is from banner ads, memberships and donations. SILVER basic memberships are $20, and GOLD supporting memberships are $75. Memberships are available for greater amounts as well. For information on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send all the details. You can even make your donation by credit card, using PayPal. If you prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal, you can send a check made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, 676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.

REAL LIVE BENEFIT TO BE HELD IN JULY
By the way, I am planning a real, actual, benefit and membership drive on July 6th to celebrate the 15th birthday of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - coinciding with my 66th birthday. Anyone contributing to the SPRING benefit with a donation of $25 or more will get a special $10 discount on the summer benefit ticket. In a few days I will be adding a special page on the website with details on the benefit including a link where you can order your reservations - space for the benefit show is limited, but a pre-show open-mic party will be also be scheduled. More news soon.

LOOKING FOR MORE REGIONAL NEWS
Visits to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website continue to increase - and folks are starting to visit the various area-related web pages. I need news to fill those NEWS BRIEFS items, especially news from the Southeast and Southwest areas, New Jersey and Upstate NY. I know there are cabaret events going on all over the world, and there is no charge to run your news item or listing - just make sure the information is complete. I actually had another item sent me this week where the performer never included their last name! Once again, I need the full address and phone number of the performance venue (I have over 300 venues in my database, but I just might not have the one you send in); I need the first and last names of all taking part, including musical director, director, band members and back up singers if used; I need to know the cover charge and minimum; oh, and don't forget the time, date - and day of the week. And please, send the information about 3 weeks in advance (not 2 days and not 2 months in advance).

Hector's is offering a 10% discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - and it gets even better: they have live music on Fridays and Saturdays, featuring Gleni Tai on the piano, and her husband Lebeaux on jazz trombone and trumpet - and open mic! Call for reservations and information.

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
MEMBERSHIP CARDS are sent to all members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, and can be used for show discounts where offered. Any show that offers a discount to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members will be listed on the special MEMBER DEALS page in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website for the run of the show, and included in the SHOW DISCOUNT listings in the MID-WEEK issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE NEWSLETTER. The discount offered must be equal to or greater than any other discount offer you make available to other persons, groups or organizations.

To be eligible for a listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send in your flier, press release and/or other promotional materials by regular mail (not via e-mail) clearly showing the discount offer. That information will be used as the basis for the website page notice, as well as for the newsletter listing. Please confirm that you have sent me the material with an e-mail reminder so I can watch for it. Please be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to be sure that these discounts will be honored.

Any member who is denied a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify me at once. I cannot guarantee that the discount will be honored, but I can take steps to contact the parties involved and publish the facts in the newsletter and remove the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.

CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ). How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. By the way, I try to get information about shows offering CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discounts up on the website first. I am also especially interested in releases on shows outside the NYC area.

Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters going out a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise? Please remember that the website, the newsletter, the reviews and my own personal visits to cabaret shows and events are entirely dependent on your support, through membership and other donations, and banner advertising.

Once again a great big thank you to the nearly 400 folks who have joined and/or rejoined CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as members for the 2004-2005 membership year, which runs until July 5th. Over 450 joined last membership year. Your support through memberships and banner advertising keeps this whole operation going and growing. Help make CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE bigger and better in the months to come.

Once again I solicit your thoughts and prayers as I continue to face a series of important decisions and activities over the next few days. Your financial support, through membership donations and banner advertising, is especially important to me right now. I am counting on your help.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
