17th ANNUAL BACK STAGE BISTRO AWARDS ANNOUNCED


Back Stage: The Performing Arts Weekly has announced the winners of the 17th Annual Bistro Awards for outstanding achievement in cabaret. Twenty-eight artists will be recognized for their distinguished work in 2001 at the BACK STAGE BISTRO AWARDS 17th ANNIVERSARY GALA at The Supper Club, 240 W. 47th Street, NYC on Monday, March 4, 6:30 pm.

Bob Harrington Lifetime Achievement Award: Blossom Dearie.

Outstanding Major Engagements: Sam Harris and Donna McKechnie

Outstanding Vocalists: Frans Bloem, Karen Oberlin, and Craig Rubano

Outstanding New York Cabaret Debut: Johnny Rodgers

Outstanding Singer/Songwriter/Instrumentalist: Jay Leonhart

Outstanding Singer/Songwriter: D.C. Anderson

Outstanding Concept Show: "Gina Caruso Does Forman Brown," written and performed by Gina Caruso

Outstanding Musical Comedy: Modern Man (David Buskin, Rob Carlson, and George Wurzbach) & "Heart & Music," created and performed by Scott Coulter, Steven Ray Watkins, and Lennie Watts

Outstanding Contribution to a Performance: Jazz violinist Johnny Frigo

Outstanding Collaboration on the Arrangement of a Single Song: Kane Alexander and Christopher Denny

Outstanding Recording: Lea DeLaria for her recording "Cool"

Outstanding Characterization: Mark McCombs

Outstanding Comedy Performer: Colette Hawley

Piano Bar Entertainment: A.J. Irvin

Musical Direction: Mark Janas

Outstanding Direction: Lennie Watts

Technical Direction: Jean-Pierre Perreaux

Continuing Excellence in Piano Bar Entertainment: George Sanders

Two Special Awards: The cabaret venue Arci's Place is being honored for its inspired programming, leading to the club's breakthrough year, and former Back Stage "Bistro Bits" columnist Roy Sander gets a Special Bistro for his insightful columns and dedication to the industry.
