Laura
Burkell Bares All As She Returns To Don't Tell Mama

She
is not naked, but Laura Burkell's new show is called "Stripped Down."
Unincumbered by bells and whistles, Ms. Burkell will simply let the
songs speak for themselves when she returns to DON'T TELL MAMA (343
West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
for three shows - Tuesdays, June 4th, 11th & 18th at 9:00 pm. She
is accompanied on piano by Paul Chamlin. There is a $10 cover and
2-drink minimum.
Vocally, Ms. Burkell sounds
like a cross between Bernadette Peters and Blondie. Her bright girlish
voice is infused with joy and passion. She is adept at story telling
and her comedic flair brightens the stage. But it is her ease and
ability to be so open that lets her true spirit shine through and
connect with the audience.
Laura is indeed a vocalist
who fuses divergent musical styles. While she sings theatrical/cabaret
songs, her style is by now means "standard." When she is not in the
uptown cabaret clubs, she is a downtown pop princess as lead singer/songwriter
of the popular downtown intergalactic alt-rock sensation POPPI. This
band's high-energy melodic pop is fun and gets the crowd dancing.
She is immersed in music, a songwriter herself, her songs are featured
in multiple films and sound track recordings.
With several cabaret shows
under her belt, including "I'm Just Doing What I Want!" (2000) and
"The Amazing Adventures of Laura Burkell" (2001), she returns this
year with a completely new show. It is a simple response to her previous
shows, which were "mini extravaganzas" featuring costume changes,
rock bands and cardboard cut out people.
Laura's repertoire includes
songs ranging from the Broadway stage favorites of "Sweet Charity"
and "Merrily We Roll Along," to the wonderful, yet lesser-known musicals
including "Raisin" and "Hallelujah Baby!"
A member of MAC, EQUITY,
SAG and AFTRA, she has been seen in numerous Television shows including
"Sex and the City" and NBC's ED, as well as countless film and theatrical
productions. She can be heard on MANICALLY HAPPY's two CD's "Short
Stories From The Loft" (1999) and "How Was Your Day?" (2000). She
is currently in rehearsal for the Studio CD version of "Stripped Down"
slated for release Fall 2002 and performing regularly with her band
POPPI all over NYC and beyond.
