The
Duplex Cabaret Theatre presents DOWNTOWN REVIVALS
Uptown performers bring
their shows to a downtown crowd
THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE
(61 Christopher Street, NYC - 212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
is proud to present DOWNTOWN REVIVALS on Sundays in September in the
famed cabaret space in the heart of New York's West Village. DOWNTOWN
REVIVALS was designed with the idea that performers who normally play
more expensive rooms, will bring their shows downtown for one night
only, playing for a $12 cover. The series debuted in June to great
success and sold-out houses, featuring cabaret luminaries Natalie
Douglas, Barbara Brussell, Quinn Lemley and John Wallowitch. All shows
begin at 7:00 pm. There is a $12 cover, and a 2-drink minimum.
On the schedule for September:
Sunday, September 8 -
Natalie Gamsu
Sunday, September 15 - Lisa Asher
Sunday, September 22 - Amanda Green (with guests Jesse Tyler Ferguson,
Kim Lindsay and Jonathan Dokuchitz)
Sunday, September 29 - Jeff Harnar (reprising his show, "The 1959
Broadway Songbook.")
After
a successful performing career in her native South Africa, Natalie
Gamsu moved to New York in 1992. She made her Manhattan debut at EIGHTY
EIGHT'S, where she subsequently headlined six seasons in her own shows.
She has also performed at the famed OAK ROOM in The Algonquin Hotel,
THE FIREBIRD CAFE, FEZ (under Time Cafe), THE RUSSIAN TEA ROOM, THE
BALLROOM, THE NANCY LAMOTT ROOM at Bradstan Country Inn and the Mabel
Mercer Cabaret Convention at Town Hall. Natalie has performed at THE
CINEGRILL in Los Angeles, and THE EXPRESS in Fresno. She won the Back
Stage Bistro Award in 1994 for Outstanding Vocalist and was nominated
for a MAC Award for Outstanding Debut in the same year. She won the
MAC Award for Outstanding Female Vocalist in 1997, and again in 2000.
Lisa
Asher has appeared as a featured vocalist and actress in numerous
concert and theatrical venues around the country. Most recently, she
was involved in the world premiere of the new musical, "Almost Heaven
. . . Songs and Stories of John Denver," at the Tony Award-winning
Denver Center Theatre Company. The show received rave reviews and
there are plans for a national tour as well as European and Broadway
productions. Lisa toured nationally with the concert version of the
Broadway show, "The Who's Tommy," and performed in the Off-Broadway
hit "Woody Guthrie's American Song," which received two Drama Desk
Nominations, including one for Best Musical. Ms. Asher appeared in
the national tour of "Woody Guthrie's American Song," and appeared
with Bruce Springsteen, Indigo Girls, Ani DeFranco and Arlo Guthrie
in a concert tribute to Woody Guthrie produced by the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame. She made her national television debut in a solo vocal
performance on the Emmy Award-winning The "Rosie O'Donnell Show."
Ms. Asher is the recipient of a MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets
and Clubs) Award, a Back Stage Bistro Award and a Cabaret Hotline
Critics Choice Award for her solo work in cabarets. Her critically-acclaimed
debut CD, "Let The Mystery Be," was nominated for a MAC Award for
Recording of the Year.
Amanda
Green is an award-winning performer and songwriter. Lyricist: Once
Upon a Primetime (recently seen at The Powerhouse Theatre in LA),
Up The Week Without a Paddle, which received a 2001 LA Drama Critic's

Comedy Performer and Outstanding Comedy Song), and has been nominated
for three others. She received Back Stage Magazine's Bistro Award
(Outstanding Comedy Song), and The Abe Olman Award for Excellence
in Songwriting from The Songwriter's Hall of Fame. Amanda performed
her hit show, "Put a Little Love in Your Mouth! Amanda Green's Tounge-in-Cheek
Songs" to sold-out houses at off-Broadway's acclaimed Second Stage
Theatre, and also at Joe's Pub, The FireBird Cafœ, and The Laurie
Beechman Theatre at the Westbank Cafe. Amanda, and others, have performed
her songs at Carnegie Hall, Rainbow and Stars, Town Hall, Tavern on
the Green, Manhattan Theatre Club, Carolines, etc. Her new CD is due
out this fall.
Jeff
Harnar has twice won the Manhattan Association of Cabaret Award (MAC)
as Best Male Vocalist and three times been honored with the Back Stage
Bistro Award (Newcomer, Male Vocalist, Best Show). Jeff has appeared
at Carnegie Hall in both the Cole Porter and Noel Coward Centennial
Galas and has performed his one-man show at Carnegie's Weill Recital
Hall. He has brought his shows to every major American city, Europe
(Paris & Oslo) and the high seas (QE2, Crystal, Celebrity, among others).
In collaboration with Musical Director Alex Rybeck and Director Sara
Louise Lazarus, Jeff has created several "theme" shows that have been
seen in New York at the Algonquin Hotel, Rainbow & Stars, The Russian
Tea Room, Town Hall and the FireBird cafe. "The 1959 Broadway Songbook,"
one of these acclaimed shows, has been recorded live on CD (Original
Cast Records) and broadcast on PBS (it is this show that Jeff will
reprise as part of Downtown Revivals). "Because of You: Fifties Gold,"
Jeff's second solo recording, is a collection of pop classics from
the song books of Tony Bennett, Nat "King" Cole, Doris Day, Johnny
Mathis and Johnny Ray. Jeff returned to the FireBird Cafe with "Sammy
Kahn All The Way," directed by Barry Kleinbort, which enjoyed a sold-out
run. On the road, Jeff has opened for the McGuire Sisters and toured
nationally as the singing narrator of "Gershwin on Ice," starring
Dorothy Hamill. That show was aired as a special presentation of the
A&E Network. Other Television credits include "CBS This Morning,"
"The Charles Grodin Show" and a "PBS Holiday Concert" co-starring
KT Sullivan. Jeff can also be seen with singer Shauna Hicks in "The
Mickey & Judy Show," an evening of songs from Hollywood's golden era.
Jeff's most recent recordings are "The Mickey & Judy Show" and "Sammy
Cahn All The Way."
